Library bookshelves can be categorized by material into metal and wooden shelves. Metal shelves can be further subdivided into single-column, multi-column, stacked, compact, and sliding shelves.
Wooden Bookshelves
Wooden bookshelves are made from solid wood, plywood, particleboard, etc., processed and assembled, then painted or finished with surface coverings, giving them a soft texture. The most common type in libraries is the upright, L-shaped bookshelf with a sloping base, facilitating easy access for readers. They come in various sizes.
Single-column Shelves
Single-column bookshelves use a single metal column on each side to support the weight of the books on each shelf horizontally. Each shelf is 90cm long and can be used individually or joined together. Generally, these shelves are over 200cm high and are usually connected at the top with a tie rod for safety.
Multi-column type
This refers to bookshelves with two or more pillars on each side to support the weight of the books on the horizontal shelves. However, for aesthetic purposes, wooden panels are often added to the sides and top of metal multi-column bookshelves.
Layer bookshelves
In storage rooms, to make the most of limited space and house a large number of books, layer bookshelves, utilizing the sturdiness and durability of steel, are an excellent method for displaying books. However, different countries have different regulations regarding bookshelf specifications. For example, in the United States, each layer of a layer is typically 2280mm high, divided into 5-7 sections; while in European countries such as the United Kingdom, each layer is typically 2250mm high, with each shelf 200mm wide and each pillar 50mm wide.
Compact shelving
Compact shelving was designed in the early 20th century by the Swiss architect Hans Ingold. After nearly a century of development and evolution, compact shelving has become increasingly widespread, and today it exists in two distinct forms. One type is a movable bookshelf made of metal, characterized by its axis (vertical direction) being perpendicular to the track direction. The other type is made of wood, with its axis and track direction being parallel; it is used in the audiovisual rooms of many libraries in China to store audiovisual materials.
